Shipwreck Playing Cards

I picked up the Shipwreck Playing Cards more as a casual add-on than a serious purchase, but after spending time with them, I only wish I’d ordered a full brick. The handling is nothing short of exceptional: impressively thin, yet smooth, controlled, and wonderfully consistent in use. Unfortunately, the deck sold out far too quickly. I sincerely hope a reprint is planned (and perhaps even a blue edition or an unmarked variant) soon. Shipwreck has all the makings of a superb go-to deck.
But let’s start with the design: The backs feature a nautical theme with lighthouses that, from a distance, unmistakably echo (and no doubt intentionally reference) the iconic Rider Back design of Bicycle cards. A very slim border, paired with a rich crimson red, lends the deck a refined and distinguished look. The shade is darker than standard Bicycles, reminiscent of the Monarchs by Theory11, yet still lighter than the deep red used in the Artisan deck.
The faces follow a classic layout, with standard English-style court cards that will feel instantly familiar. The only design twist is the use of turquoise detailing throughout; a subtle but stylish touch that reinforces the maritime theme and adds a layer of visual elegance. Personally, I’d love to see a future edition with a deep turquoise back to match.
Magicians will also appreciate the inclusion of six (!) gaff cards, a generous and thoughtful addition. The marking system is easy to read while remaining discreet, striking a good balance between usability and concealment. That said, I’d still welcome an unmarked edition for more casual or performance-focused use in non-magic settings.
What truly sets this deck apart, however, is the handling.
The crushed stock (produced in China) feels significantly thinner than standard Bicycle stock – around 5–6 cards thinner per deck, and still a couple of cards slimmer than USPCC’s crushed alternative. Despite this, Faros, springs and flourishes are smooth and effortless. The cards feel compact, responsive and satisfyingly snappy in hand. Simply put: they are an absolute pleasure to use – so much so that I almost hesitate to wear them out before the next edition becomes available.
